The Community Hub - familiar faces through transition

The Community Hub team (left to right): Khanh (Help and Support Officer), Maria (Community Engagement Coordinator), Hoa (Help and Support Officer), Manal (Community Hub Coordinator), Modester (Health Promotion Coordinator), Christina (Healthy Communities Manager) and Lisa (Head of Community Services).

For many residents in the North Richmond Precinct, the current redevelopment means more than construction – it means moving home, and for some, leaving a familiar community. As this transition continues, our Community Hub team has been providing support to residents through every step of the process, alongside their everyday work with the broader community. For full details on works happening across the precinct, visit homes.vic.gov.au/precincts/richmond-precinct.

Support for residents who are relocating

For residents who are relocating, the Community Hub team offers one-on-one support and case coordination, as well as help navigating housing, utilities and digital services like MyGov and Centrelink. The Hub also runs regular information sessions in partnership with organisations including Homes Victoria, Housing Choices Australia, Good Shepherd, the Australian Vietnamese Women’s Association, City of Yarra and Services Australia. All the while, they continue their everyday work supporting the health and wellbeing of the broader community.

The support during this transition period has been especially valuable for the many residents facing extra barriers, including elderly residents, people with limited English, and those with low digital literacy. Between January and March this year, the team supported more than 2,300 people through their work.

Coming to the Hub helps me feel less worried because someone explains it properly.

Everyday support for the whole community

While the redevelopment has brought extra demand, the Hub has long been a trusted, everyday space for the community. The team is made up of skilled multilingual lived-experience workers, helping residents feel understood and comfortable seeking support.

In addition to relocation support, there is a lot of additional help available at the Hub, including:

  • Regular weekly groups and activities
  • Financial counselling
  • Mental wellbeing programs
  • Youth pathways into education and employment
  • A weekly affordable food market run by the Community Grocer (Wednesdays 8:30am-12:30pm 106 Elizabeth Street Richmond)
  • Food relief assistance

The Hub team also works closely with other teams at North Richmond Community Health including Allied Health, Counselling and Casework and our new Community Paramedic service. This teamwork, and the partnerships we nurture, ensure people can access support for a range of needs in one familiar place. Working together means we can be far more impactful than if our teams and partners worked alone.
