Home » Our Services » Medically Supervised Injecting Room (MSIR)

The Medically Supervised Injecting Room (MSIR) is a world-class health service providing life-saving, compassionate healthcare and support for people who use drugs.

Delivered in partnership with North Richmond Community Health, St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne, Access Health and Community, and Your Community Health, the MSIR provides supervision for people who inject drugs in a clean and safe environment. It also provides wraparound care and support including access to mental health, medical, blood-borne virus testing and treatment, dental, housing, drug treatment and rehabilitation, and other health and social services onsite.

“At the heart of our work is a simple belief: every person deserves to be treated with dignity and respect, no matter their circumstances.”

Simone Heald

Chief Executive Officer, North Richmond Community Health

Why North Richmond?

The North Richmond community has faced the challenges of drug use and related harms for decades. The City of Yarra, which encompasses North Richmond, recorded the highest number of heroin-related deaths in Victoria over a nine-year period (2009–2018).

The decision to establish an MSIR in North Richmond was based on international evidence, recommendations from a parliamentary inquiry, strong support from a broad range of stakeholders, including coroners, medical experts, first responders, and community members. Independent reviews conducted during the MSIR’s six-year trial period have demonstrated that the service has saved lives and connected thousands of people to critical health and social support services.
