Last week Guardian Early Learning Richmond held a Great Book Swap at our centre for our local community. Children, parents, teachers and other community members took home a new book to read in exchange for a cold coin. The donations will provide books and literacy programs for the remote communities that need them most.

In very remote Indigenous communities, literacy levels are significantly lower than anywhere else in Australia due to limited books and literacy resources. Being unable to read and write lowers these community’s levels of education, employment, health and wellbeing.

The 2018 National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) results indicated that only 36% of Indigenous Year 5 students in very remote Northern Territory communities meet the minimum standard for reading, compared to 96% for non-Indigenous students in major cities. While there have been improvements in Closing the Gap since the journey began in 2005, there is still a long way to go.
