Access the MSIR

If you’re someone who injects drugs and is looking for a safe, welcoming, non-judgemental environment, the MSIR in North Richmond is here to help.

We provide a safe space where you can inject under the supervision of trained medical staff who can assist you if you need help. They can also provide or help connect you to other health and social services. Whatever your circumstances, we’re here to offer the help you need.

Our priority is your safety and wellbeing. No appointment is needed, and our services are confidential, and you can register anonymously if you wish. You must be 18 years of age or over.

How the service works

Check in

When you enter the MSIR, you will be assessed by staff and registered as a client. Our staff will talk to you about your current situation, medical history and the drug you intend to inject. This information assists staff in the case of an overdose. The MSIR does not supply drugs.

Medically supervised injecting and overdose response

You will move through to the injecting area. You’ll be provided with sterile injecting equipment and harm reduction advice before you inject in one of the 20 available injecting positions. Once you have injected, you will dispose of any needles and syringes safely.

The injecting area is supervised at all times by clinicians. You’ll be monitored closely for signs of overdose or other health issues. If you overdose, staff will administer the required intervention which may include oxygen, naloxone or other medication.

Aftercare and wraparound support

After injecting, you will move to an aftercare space, where you can stay until you feel ready to leave. During this time, you’re able to talk casually and confidentially with qualified staff about any other health and support needs you might have, such as mental health, medical, legal, housing, drug treatment and rehabilitation.

If you would like to have a private discussion about your needs and circumstances with one of our friendly staff members, please give us a call on 9418 9811.
