Sorry Day community BBQ at North Richmond

This Sunday 26 May is National Sorry Day. Sorry Day is a day of healing that recognises the mistreatment and injustices suffered by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders during the Stolen Generations. It is a day that we to come together as a community to acknowledge our past and celebrate Australia’s First People.

Sorry Day is a time for all Australians to reflect on the loss and trauma that thousands of Aboriginal families have experienced. Many members of our community are feeling the effects of government Acts which saw children removed from their families and cultural links destroyed. Around one in seven Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders now aged over 50 were removed from their families.

For this year’s Sorry Day we will be holding a community BBQ on Friday 24 May which will feature a Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony, Indigenous Hip-Hop and a performance by the Djirri Djirri Dance Group.

For those who may have family members separated from them or would like more information on the Stolen Generations, Link-Up Victoria is an excellent resource which offers family reunion services, counselling and help finding past family records.
