Seeing Beyond Stigma: Amy’s Story from the Frontline of Healthcare
“Good people use drugs. Behind every person who walks through our doors is a human being with a story – and, more often than not, with trauma and complexity.”
For Amy, a registered nurse with over 25 years’ experience, these words reflect not just her philosophy but her daily reality working at one of healthcare’s most misunderstood frontlines – the Medically Supervised Injecting Room (MSIR) at North Richmond Community Health.
From emergency departments to medical retrieval flights to helping establish Australia’s first nurse-led Sobering Up Service, Amy has witnessed healthcare at its most critical moments.
“I’ve always been passionate about supporting people who are vulnerable or marginalised,” she says. “And AOD [alcohol and other drug] nursing gives me a real opportunity to do that.”
Amy’s commitment to her clients is matched by her dedication to professional growth. She’s currently studying a Graduate Diploma in Addictive Behaviours to further deepen her understanding and impact in the field.
What makes the MSIR special, Amy believes, is the strong sense of community that has emerged within its walls. “The people who use the Medically Supervised Injecting Room aren’t just clients to each other. It’s a community with a great sense of belonging. A client recently lost his son, and it was powerful to see how other clients and staff rallied around to support him.”
This unique environment creates profound human connections. “They can come and have a laugh and be treated without any stigma and be treated as normal human beings, because they are,” Amy says. “It’s a fun space. We shed tears together, we laugh together.”
Beyond saving lives and preventing overdose-related harm, the MSIR also delivers wraparound health and social services. It is now the busiest single site for hepatitis C screening and treatment in Victoria. It has provided over 2,545 blood-borne virus tests and supported 399 people to begin hepatitis C treatment, thanks to the dedicated work of nurses and healthcare professionals like Amy.
On International Nurses Day, we celebrate Amy and all the compassionate healthcare professionals at North Richmond Community Health who see beyond stigma to deliver world-class care to everyone who walks through their doors.
