How do we #PressForProgress this International Women’s Day?

Today is International Women’s Day.

“What are we supposed to do on International Women’s day? Do I have to bow down to anyone?” Such offhand remarks are a common response to the day.

There is no bowing down required. No physical strain is required at all in fact.

Today we can begin by simply addressing the common lack of awareness, recognition or respect for the fact that women face inequalities and injustice on a daily basis.

This year’s International Women’s Day campaign theme is #PressForProgress. North Richmond Community Health commits to pressing for progress on equality, justice and rights for women.

We realise that progress does not just happen, it takes time and perseverance.

Today we can take the time to think about our own behaviour. Do we ever make assumptions about a person’s behaviours, personality, roles and responsibilities, or capabilities based on their sex?

We can have the conversation with others about their understanding and views on gender inequality. Do they think men and women are treated equally in their home, their office and the public spaces around them?

Today is about having the courage to stand up for women. Sometimes the conversation can be too hard for a woman to have themselves as they feel unsafe or threatened by an imbalance in power.

North Richmond Community Health commits to pressing on in our support for women’s rights. We will continue to reflect on our actions in how we treat each other and in our services to the community. And we will continue to support change towards better access to healthcare for women in rural areas and culturally diverse backgrounds.
