IOAD is a global day to remember those we’ve lost to overdose and to recognise those who have survived — free from stigma. It is also a time to stand with families and friends who are grieving, to learn more about overdose prevention, and to show compassion for everyone affected.
What this day means at NRCH
For us at North Richmond Community Health, IOAD is an important opportunity to reflect on the work we do every day – supporting clients, families and the broader community through the Medically Supervised Injecting Room (MSIR), Harm Reduction, and AOD Outreach and Engagement teams.
It is also a chance to recognise the dedication of our staff, whose care and support for at-risk clients in challenging circumstances plays a vital role in reducing harm and saving lives.
Voices from our clients
This year, our MSIR clients have led the creation of an open letter to society. In their own words, they share who they are, the challenges they face, and why places like the MSIR matter.
The letter is a powerful reminder that behind the sensationalised headlines are real people doing their best, wanting to survive, and deserving dignity and respect.
The letter will be on display alongside a multimedia installation in the glassed area of the Meeting Place Café over the coming week. We invite our community to take time to view these impactful and meaningful pieces.
