Bridging the Gaps in Care: Jane’s Work at the MSIR and in Outreach

Every six minutes, on average, someone walks through the doors of North Richmond’s Medically Supervised Injecting Room (MSIR) seeking safety, dignity, and care. For many, it’s the only interaction they’ll have with the healthcare system that month – or even that year.

“For many people, we are probably the only support structure they have, and they need guidance and reassurance. It’s very easy for outsiders to judge them based on the decisions they make, but as clinicians, we understand the lifelong trauma and hardship that most of us would never comprehend.”

As a Nurse In Charge at North Richmond’s Medically Supervised Injecting Room and Care Coordinator with the AOD Outreach and Engagement Program, Jane embodies the profound difference that compassionate, trauma-informed care can make.

“I have always been drawn to working with clients with complex needs. I feel these are the people that fall through the gaps in our healthcare system, and I want to help bridge those gaps.”

Jane’s work extends far beyond clinical care. It’s about building genuine connections and creating pathways to dignity and stability for people facing multiple challenges.

“We worked recently with a client who was experiencing homelessness and sleeping on the street,” Jane shares. “He was malnourished, dealing with mental health issues, substance use, and an acquired brain injury – completely vulnerable in every way. We took him onto our caseload and have since moved him into supported accommodation. He’s now linked with healthcare services, legal services, and mental health support. He’s doing really well. We’ve even helped him manage his finances so that he is secure and protected in that way.”

The AOD Outreach and Engagement team works closely with members of the community experiencing substance use issues, providing support for people who might otherwise remain disconnected from vital services.

While we marked International Nurses Day earlier this week, at North Richmond Community Health we recognise the dedication, compassion, and expertise of nurses and healthcare professionals like Jane every day. Her work is a powerful reminder that healthcare goes beyond treatment – it’s in hearing people’s stories, understanding their struggles, and offering support without judgment, particularly those too often overlooked.
